Positional Identity
It is important to understand the structure of the cosmos through both modern scientific discovery and the wisdom presented in Vedic scriptures. We currently reside on a planet called Earth, which is part of our solar system consisting of one star, the Sun, and eight to nine planets. Our entire solar system exists within the Milky Way galaxy, a vast celestial system estimated to contain anywhere from 100 to 400 billion stars and planetary systems. Beyond this, scientific estimates suggest that the observable universe contains between 100 billion to nearly 2 trillion galaxies. Considering this scale, there may be around 10²⁴ planets within just the observable portion of the universe.
Yet, Vedic scriptures describe creation as far more expansive than what can be observed. They state that there are not merely trillions, but uncountable universes within the material cosmic domain created by God. Among these countless universes, we inhabit one particular universe—referred to as Chaturmukhi Brahmanda—containing billions of galaxies. Each of those galaxies holds billions of stars and planets, and among all of them lies a tiny speck called "Earth." On Earth, there are approximately 195 countries and vast oceans, and each of us lives within one small region on this planet.
Understanding Earth's place in the cosmos also involves recognizing its continuous motion. Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours, giving us day and night. Simultaneously, it revolves around the Sun, completing one full orbit every 365.25 days, which results in our seasons. Yet there is another fascinating journey—our entire solar system, including Earth, is orbiting the center of the Milky Way galaxy. As the Sun moves through the galaxy at tremendous speeds, Earth moves with it, essentially "chasing" the Sun through space. While Earth's revolution and rotation contribute small variations, the total effective speed of our planet is over 230 km per second — that's roughly 828,000 kilometers per hour. Let that sink in!
This grand arrangement raises fundamental questions: How did this entire creation come into existence? Was it merely the result of a random explosion? Or does the precision and harmony of the cosmos point toward intelligent design? These are profound thoughts that call us to explore deeper truths. The Vedas further reveal that beyond all temporary material universes lies another dimension — the Spiritual Realm. Unlike the material world, which undergoes constant change and eventual annihilation, the spiritual realm is eternal, full of bliss, and is described as the divine abode of God. This supreme, everlasting domain is called Param Vyom — the Supreme Spiritual Sky.
